What’s going in Across from the River Run Soccer Fields? – Lots

Davidson, NC   Welcome the newest community to our small town, Westbranch by Lennar Homes.  The infrastructure is well under way as Lennar readies construction of

  • 107 Townhomes
  • 101 Detached (42’ wide lots)
  • 88 Detached (65’ wide lots)
  • 10 Detached (90’ wide lots

The 170 acre Westbranch neighborhood with 306 housing units is expected to have +/- 88 acres of open space.  A new road is being constructed to connect Hudson Place with Westbranch which runs behind Westmoreland Farms all the way up Davidson Concord road to the area across from the new fire station.

A commercial component is anticipated for a future phase at the corner of Davidson Concord Road and Robert Walker.

Lennar describes their offering as;

“Westbranch is the kind of community that anyone could find happiness in. With gorgeous single-family homes, including Lennar’s new Arbor collection, you’ll be sure to find the home that is perfect for you. Located in historic Davidson, NC, there is no shortage of entertainment or community. Come visit today to find your new dream home in Westbranch!”

In their Coosaw Preserve Neighborhood in South Carolina their homes go from the high $200s to mid-$300s.  We will probably see a Davidson premium on these although we have not yet seen pricing.

Are Burgers a theme? – Here is the Greatest new spot – The Barcelona Burger & Beer Garden – Mooresville

Our tour of the best burger joints continues by accident.  It seems an unhealthy theme is arising on our blog.  Look for more pics from the greenway as I work off my dining research.   The Barcelona Burger & Beer Garden was not on my radar, but my wife mentioned it and we decided to check it out.  Their name says beer garden so we decided to Uber from Davidson to Mooresville so we could fully research the spot.

It is very large and efficient.  If you’ve been to the amazing Alino Pizzeria in Mooresville you’ll love this spot.   Same building.  Same owner?  Check out the video of the space and yes, the line.  Always a good sign to have a long line and because they are so efficient it really moved.

The menu is straight forward and offers a good variety.  I tried a burger, my wife a chicken sandwich and my son the hot dog and mac and cheese.  The gelato bar looked tempting.IMG_0851

My wife being healthy.  Chicken sandwich with salad.

My son being 9.  Hot Dog with Mac and Cheese side.

Me doing the research for you.  A great burger.  Great Onion Rings.  The salad I ate on the side was healthy. (OK no salad)

This place is amazing, family friendly and close.   We hope you check it out.  You will not be disappointed.

Dining Out – Crafty Burg’r – Antiquity

Davidson, NC    After soccer at Richard Barry Memorial Park in Huntersville we were looking for a dog-friendly place to grab some dinner on the way home.  We decided to check out the outdoor seating at Crafty Burg’r in Antiquity in Cornelius.  We recalled seeing friendly dog water bowls outside and saw that as an invitation.

It was surprisingly happening on a Friday night.  They had a two-piece band jamming in the corner and a solid crowd.  We sat outside and enjoyed an adult beverage while we checked out the menu.

Their menu

We both selected the “Garlic Bacon Burg’r” described as follows:

“This Vampire killer is topped with bacon, avocado, red onions and our homemade garlic aioli.”

Who could resist?  Burg’rs come with 2 sides.  I chose onion rings and a warm bean side dish which is like baked beans but better.  My son ordered the chicken fingers and fries and got a side of mac-n-cheese from his mom.

The food was really good.  The burgers challenge to be named one of the best around.  Sides were great.  Our puppy was happy to chill under the table.  I definitely recommend Friday night at the Crafty Burg’r.

Davidson, NC   Ok Davidson let’s learn sushi from the best!  Ken at Sabi is a great guy.  I remember he quizzed my daughter on her Chinese while we sat at the sushi bar and gave us a memorable experience.  Ken is offering a cool course Saturday at 3:30 through Davidson Park & Rec at Sabi.  You will learn sushi….learn rice… and make sushi.  Hopefully there is an edible payoff.  We are lucky in Davidson to have this restaurant.  Ugh!  Getting hungry while writing,

Parts of Area Housing Market still Red Hot – Davidson

Homes in the lower price points are still flying off the market.  This home in Cornelius, listed at $249,900, went under contract the same day it was listed.  The listing agent, Clark Goff of Allen Tate Davidson stated, “My client was thrilled.  A quick sale fit her needs perfectly.”

While homes in this price point frequently make it to the market in adjoining towns, people looking for this price point in Davidson need to be ready to pounce.  Clark Goff commented, “We prepare our buyer clients by making sure they are pre-qualified for a mortgage and we prepare them for multiple offer situations.”

Looking for a home for less than $250k with 3 or more bedrooms, you have 8 to choose from in Davidson.  Want to narrow it to Davidson in Mecklenburg County you have 4 choices.  When affordable homes go on the market they sell quickly.  In the last 6 months homes in Davidson under $250k went under contract in an average of 11 days and sold at over 98% of asking price.

It would be nice if our public servants, the police, firemen and teachers, could afford to live in town.  As more and more people migrate to the Lake Norman area we’ll continue to see pressure on the housing supply.

Davidson Day Trip – Emerald Hollow Mine in Hiddenite

Davidson, NC  We drove up to Emerald Hollow Mine in Hiddenite today for some sluicing.  We were on the hunt for big gems.  They have quite the set-up and can handle a bunch of amateur hunters.  If you are serious you can go dig your own dirt or dig in the creek, but we decided to purchase one of the pre-filled buckets of dirt and possible treasure.

It is a 45 minute drive from Davidson up I77 then over on I40.  You’ll pass a cool looking restaurant called Yellow Deli which looks good and was packed if you want food.

We washed a bunch of gems from our bucket; amazonite, sodalite, quartz, emerald, sapphire….

I really recommend a trip there with the kids.  We bought our mining permits and a “super” bucket for $30.  Pick a nice day and go.

Hey Davidson Dads – Time to join Y-guides and start a tribe

Davidson, NC   The organizational meeting is tomorrow night at 7 at the Lake Norman Y.
“It’s all about the patches” – participant quote
One of the best things I ever did with my kids was join Y-guides (formerly Indian Guides). Join and start a tribe with dads and kids from your area.  My tribes have been a mixture of dads I knew and dads I didn’t know.  We always became friends as we spent time together with our kids.
The Y-guides program typically starts at age 5 and lasts 5 years.  Each year dads and their child do activities together with their tribe and earn patches for their vests and earn different tribal award levels.    There is a Fall Longhouse and a Spring Longhouse where tribes go to a YMCA or other camp for a weekend of activities usually including canoeing, hiking, crafts, ropes course, zip line, games, songs and horseback riding.  The weekend culminates into the fire walk; an amazing ceremony on Saturday night around a bonfire.  So really you go to a great camp, get fed 3 meals a day and play with your kid.  Your child will love this time with you.
Horseback Riding at Camp Harrison
It’s funny how moms become jealous of the great stories your sons and daughters bring back from the weekend.  It is truly an opportunity to make great memories with your kids.
Throughout the year tribes typically get together once a month for a meeting at someone’s home for a craft or activity.
Please come out to the YMCA on Monday night.  Andy Belich and the Y-guides staff are amazing and make the program truly worthwhile.

Are you brave enough to see IT, Davidson? – A Horror Review

Davidson, NC   IT is Showing at Our Town Cinemas  @ 7:10 and 10:10pm  Rated R.

Contributing reviewer – Davidson Foodie

The latest movie adaptation of Stephen King’s IT is a strong showing that pays homage to both the book and the original series from the ’90s. The latest installment features Pennywise, the Dancing Clown as the main villain, one who succeeds in being more than just a mindless villain who appears for quick jump scares and then proceeds to disappear until the next.  With a level of character development and background rare in horror films, this is not a movie you watch solely for the scares. While some may find the time between jumps to be a bit long, especially earlier in the movie, this time is pivotal for character and scene development to round out the entire experience. With a very memorable villain and solid story, IT is definitely a must see especially for horror fans. Be sure to check Our Town Cinemas for upcoming showings.

Davidson Film Club presents Local Filmmakers Showcase – Saturday

Davidson, NC     How great is Davidson.  I did not know we had a film club bringing cool opportunities to see films locally.  The DFC is a non-profit, tax exempt organization run by an all-volunteer, unpaid, Board of Directors.  Founded in January 2013  it screens one film a month at the comfortable, tiered seating, Armour Street Theater in Davidson, home of the Davidson Community Players.  All screenings take place on Saturday nights at 7:00 p.m.

Saturday September 9th

Charlotte filmmaker Shea Sizemore presents and discusses his just completed feature film County Line (2017, 1h29), a police thriller, before general release of the film.

Film Summary:

Tough, no nonsense, Marine vet, Alden Rockwell has lost his bid for re-election as sheriff of Maksville County. Reluctantly, he settles into retirement. Alden’s wife has passed, and still grieving he spends much of his time tending to the chickens, pigs, and house pets she loved on their farm. Alden’s good friend Sheriff Clint Thorne has been re-elected in neighboring York County. While investigating a mysterious symbol that’s appearing in more and more places in the county, Clint gets a little too close to the truth and pays for it. Now, Alden jumps into action alone, poking around for answers. As Alden works to find the truth and render justice to his friend, he’s drawn deeper into a web of crime, deceit, corruption, and evil threatening to take over the town . . .

Sounds like a great night out!  Check out our Davidson Restaurants here for a meal before the show.

Bass Fishing Lake Davidson – with a Shaky Tail

Davidson, NC     Lake Davidson is a fun and productive body of water for bass fishing.  The lack of access and boats puts less pressure on the fishery.  Here is one of my favorite strategies for catching bass from a boat or the shore.  I like it from a kayak.  The key is an extremely slow retrieve after you cast.

I use Zoom Shaky Tails ($5.29 per pack) on a Spot Remover Jig Head ($5.49 per pack) which I purchased at Bass Pro Shop.  My favorite colors of Shaky Tails are Watermelon and Green Pumpkin, but Black is the most popular.  In the picture below I rigged one.  You slide the bottom of the worm onto the ribbed point below the hook and then put the hook through the side of the worm showing minimum barb for weedless retrieve.

Tie this on and cast it out and try to avoid sunken trees which you can snag.  Retrieve this extremely slowly – slower than you expect.  I like to slowly jig it to create action.  Keep a sharp eye on your line because often you won’t feel a hit, but you’ll start to see your line move through the water after a bass picks it up.  Then game on.

Let me know how it goes.  Tight lines!
