Hey Davidson Dads – Time to join Y-guides and start a tribe

Davidson, NC   The organizational meeting is tomorrow night at 7 at the Lake Norman Y.
“It’s all about the patches” – participant quote
One of the best things I ever did with my kids was join Y-guides (formerly Indian Guides). Join and start a tribe with dads and kids from your area.  My tribes have been a mixture of dads I knew and dads I didn’t know.  We always became friends as we spent time together with our kids.
The Y-guides program typically starts at age 5 and lasts 5 years.  Each year dads and their child do activities together with their tribe and earn patches for their vests and earn different tribal award levels.    There is a Fall Longhouse and a Spring Longhouse where tribes go to a YMCA or other camp for a weekend of activities usually including canoeing, hiking, crafts, ropes course, zip line, games, songs and horseback riding.  The weekend culminates into the fire walk; an amazing ceremony on Saturday night around a bonfire.  So really you go to a great camp, get fed 3 meals a day and play with your kid.  Your child will love this time with you.

It’s funny how moms become jealous of the great stories your sons and daughters bring back from the weekend.  It is truly an opportunity to make great memories with your kids.
Throughout the year tribes typically get together once a month for a meeting at someone’s home for a craft or activity.
Please come out to the YMCA on Monday night.  Andy Belich and the Y-guides staff are amazing and make the program truly worthwhile.
