Calling All 5 & 6 Year Olds – Get Dad to Form your Tribe for Fall.

Lake Norman, NC      It is time to form your Y-guides tribe for fall.   My college age kids still talk about all the fun we had with our tribes.   It’s hard to describe how great Y-guides is for dads and kids to spend time together and “make memories.”  If you have a 5 or 6 year old please look into the program and consider joining.  You will not regret the bond you form with your child, the new friends you will make and the fun you will have.

Tribes of braves and princesses get together throughout the year for meetings or activities organized by the program.  Some highlights are Princess Date Night, Camp-out at BB&T Ball Park after a game, polar bear plunge, Christmas Parade, and, of course Fall and Spring Longhouses.   Kids learn about service too through opportunities to visit Ada Jenkins Center and its Food Pantry and giving back at Classroom Central.

Moms.  It is OK to help your husband sign up and form a tribe, but you will eventually be jealous of all the fun your son or daughter is having as they make great memories with their dad.   I have had a tribe where I knew dads and we formed it and I have had a tribe where we formed at the YMCA information meeting.  Either way, your kids will cherish their time in Y-guides and the friends they make.

246468_205670599563088_1731325066_nDon’t miss out!  Registration begins late summer/early fall.

If you’ve done Y-guides in the past, please tell young families you know about Y-guides and how worthwhile and fun it is.

Please contact me with any questions about the program.  I did it with my 3 kids over the last 17 years and have attended 30+ Longhouses.  Clark Goff, 704 996-0948 clark.goff@allentate.com

You can Kayak/Canoe on Lake Davidson!

Davidson, NC    Did you know we have amazing public access to kayak and canoe on Lake Davidson thanks to Davidson Lands Conservancy, a grant from REI and the cooperation of the Town of Davidson and Davidson Day School.   This group of thoughtful entities built and maintain an access trail and canoe/kayak launch on Lake Davidson.

The payoff for your 900 foot hike in.  Great views.

Davidson Watercraft Rack Leasing Program

Arborists have identified the trees!

For a full time kayak/canoe rack space you need to enter the lottery in November.

The entrance on Jetton Street is clearly marked behind the Davidson Day athletic field.  Worth a walk to check out or carry in your kayak.  It’s great to live in Davidson and have this amazing outdoor space.  Secret:  The bass fishing is really good on Lake Davidson from a Kayak!   Use a shaky tail.

I checked with Davidson Park & Rec and they are full for rack space this year.

Calling All 5 & 6 Year Olds – Get Dad to Form your Tribe for Fall.

Lake Norman, NC      I just returned from Spring Longhouse at Camp Harrison in Boomer, NC  where I spent an awesome weekend with my 9 year old son and our tribe The Running Wolves.  It’s hard to describe how great Y-guides is for dads and kids to spend time together and “make memories.”  If you have a 5 or 6 year old please look into the program and consider joining.  You will not regret the bond you form with your child, the new friends you will make and the fun you will have.

Trout Fishing near Davidson, NC – Mitchell River

Davidson, NC  This is a great time of year for trout fishermen.  The delayed harvest stocking has begun.  Looks like the streams should be stocked by the weekend.  Want to try a stream about an hour from Davidson, you should fish the Mitchell River in Dobson.  I77 North to exit 93 go left and follow your map.   There are lots of pretty places to park along the river and fly fish for trout.  Easy access and usually a good amount of fish.  I’d stop into Madison River Flyfishing in Cornelius to buy some flies and get advice and directions.  You’ll enjoy this stream so close to Davidson.

Hey Davidson Dads – Time to join Y-guides and start a tribe

Davidson, NC   The organizational meeting is tomorrow night at 7 at the Lake Norman Y.
“It’s all about the patches” – participant quote
One of the best things I ever did with my kids was join Y-guides (formerly Indian Guides). Join and start a tribe with dads and kids from your area.  My tribes have been a mixture of dads I knew and dads I didn’t know.  We always became friends as we spent time together with our kids.
The Y-guides program typically starts at age 5 and lasts 5 years.  Each year dads and their child do activities together with their tribe and earn patches for their vests and earn different tribal award levels.    There is a Fall Longhouse and a Spring Longhouse where tribes go to a YMCA or other camp for a weekend of activities usually including canoeing, hiking, crafts, ropes course, zip line, games, songs and horseback riding.  The weekend culminates into the fire walk; an amazing ceremony on Saturday night around a bonfire.  So really you go to a great camp, get fed 3 meals a day and play with your kid.  Your child will love this time with you.

Horseback Riding at Camp Harrison
It’s funny how moms become jealous of the great stories your sons and daughters bring back from the weekend.  It is truly an opportunity to make great memories with your kids.
Throughout the year tribes typically get together once a month for a meeting at someone’s home for a craft or activity.
Please come out to the YMCA on Monday night.  Andy Belich and the Y-guides staff are amazing and make the program truly worthwhile.

Bass Fish Lake Davidson

Bass Fishing Lake Davidson – with a Shaky Tail

Davidson, NC     Lake Davidson is a fun and productive body of water for bass fishing.  The lack of access and boats puts less pressure on the fishery.  Here is one of my favorite strategies for catching bass from a boat or the shore.  I like it from a kayak.  The key is an extremely slow retrieve after you cast.

I use Zoom Shaky Tails ($5.29 per pack) on a Spot Remover Jig Head ($5.49 per pack) which I purchased at Bass Pro Shop.  My favorite colors of Shaky Tails are Watermelon and Green Pumpkin, but Black is the most popular.  In the picture below I rigged one.  You slide the bottom of the worm onto the ribbed point below the hook and then put the hook through the side of the worm showing minimum barb for weedless retrieve.

img_0780.jpg

Tie this on and cast it out and try to avoid sunken trees which you can snag.  Retrieve this extremely slowly – slower than you expect.  I like to slowly jig it to create action.  Keep a sharp eye on your line because often you won’t feel a hit, but you’ll start to see your line move through the water after a bass picks it up.  Then game on.

Let me know how it goes.  Tight lines!
